COSPLAY TUTORIAL

Our skirt design was photographed over a purchased petticoat for that extra oomph. If you don’t want to purchase a separate crinoline petticoat, or you can’t find one at a flea market or vintage shop, here’s a tip on how to add more shape and swirl to your hem.

Try using horsehair braid in the hem of your skirt. Horsehair braid is no longer made of real horsehair; it’s made from either polyester or nylon and comes in a variety of widths. Try a wider width, maybe 2", to give your skirt hem more body.

The actual horsehair has a slight curve on the bottom edge to fit a curved hem. The upper edge has little loops throughout the braid, so you can pull on these to fit in the curve of your hem.

When calculating how much horsehair braid you need, measure the circumference of your hem and add at least 1/2" for overlapping the ends.

Stitch your braid to the right side of your skirt hem. When you reach the end of your braid we suggest covering the raw end with some seam binding, so you don’t get scratched.

Next, turn your braid to the inside of your skirt and press the hem, but not the braid. This is where you get to pull those little loops to make your braid curve.

Now, you’re ready to hem. Use a stitch that is a little longer than what you used to sew your garment, for a nice finish on the outside of your skirt.
